2020 Wrap Up

 Now that we're looking at 2020 in the rear-view mirror, I thought it would be fun to look at what I accomplished this year. 

*I released 6 quilt patterns:

Star Stacks

Ribbit

Wonk Around the Block

Strippy Improv Holiday

*I finished 12 quilts.

Honestly, I would have thought this number would have been higher. It was a busy year outside of quilting, but it felt really productive. Still, one a month isn't too shabby!

*I pieced 6 more quilts that I haven't quilted yet. Guess those are going on the 2021 list! 

I have my first two quilts  planned out for 2021, and they'll both be released as quilt patterns, so keep an eye out for them! (More info to come).

Wonk Around the Block in Indigo!

 This morning I finished up the last workshop session with the Great Lakes Modern Quilt Guild. We've been doing my Wonk Around the Block pattern as a virtual sew along since May, and it's been a lot of fun, and a great way to still be able to sew together even when we're apart. For my demo version for the sew along, I used the gorgeous Indigo Batiks from Anthology Fabrics.

Here's a progression of my quilt through the months: 

Month 1: The wonky center star that starts it all: 

Month 2: Flying geese border + additional borders

Month 3: Wonky Log Cabin blocks

Months 4 : More borders

Month 6: Half Shoo Fly and Wonky Flying Geese for the finish! 

Next up, of course, is quilting!

Wonk Around the Block - Month 5

We're in the home stretch! Just two months more on my Wonk Around the Block pattern.

Wonk Around the Block is my new Block of the Month quilt pattern combining traditional and wonky piecing. You can purchase the pattern on my Etsy shop and receive one section per month for 6 months. I hope you'll come sew with me! 

Here's my Cotton Shot version after Month 5:

Month 5 includes the easiest improv block ever--the confetti block. One cut, two seams. Perfect to get your feet wet on improv. There's also another pieced row for a splash of color along the top, and a few more borders to set the quilt up for the final two pieced sections coming in Month 6.

If you'd like some support as you sew this quilt, I'm also offering video demos for each month - I'm super excited about this! In the videos, I'll walk you through each step of the process--almost like a class! I also include additional tips and tricks for putting the quilt together. If you're new to wonky piecing, these video demos will augment the detailed diagrams in the pattern to help you master this technique. 

The group of six videos (I'll be adding one each month) can be purchased in my Etsy shop for $10. You'll receive a link with access to the current videos, and that same link will work for future videos. Click here to purchase.

We'll assemble as we go, so by the end of Month 6, your quilt will be complete!

Block of the Month - Month 4

Hello, September! (How it is September already?) It's Month 4 of the Wonk Around the Block BOM quilt.

Month 4 is all about borders--some pieced, and some plain. The fun part about this month is choosing the colors for your borders--pops of color can make such a difference in the design!

It's July and time for Month 2 of the Wonk Around the Block quilt! 

To recap, Wonk Around the Block is my new Block of the Month quilt pattern combining traditional and wonky piecing. You can purchase the pattern on my Etsy shop and receive one section per month for 6 months. I hope you'll come sew with me! 

Month 2 is the breather month, which is good, because even in these strange pandemic times, July always seems like a busy month. We're making a row/column of three-color flying geese units and adding them to the quilt center. Plus one solid border row, and you're done!

Now Available: Wonk Around the Block BOM - Month 1

Guess what?! Starting today, the Wonk Around the Block pattern is available for purchase!

This quilt pattern combines traditional and wonky piecing in a modern design. I've set it up as a 6-part Blook of the Month pattern: Month 1 is available right now, and then Month 2 will be available on June 21st, Month 3 on July 21st, etc. 

Diane Oakes (@quiltingandcats) machine quilted this quilt, and she did a fantastic job. Each section or strip has its own design, and she used five different thread colors. 

I used Painter's Palette Solids from Paintbrush Studio in my quilt. Teal is my favorite color, so I started there and then added in the oranges and golds for contrast. I chose three different grays to work with the white as "backgrounds." You can use as many or as few colors as you like. 

I'd love for you to join me in making this quilt! The pattern includes detailed directions for each unit, but I'll also be offering video tutorials (available next week) to walk you through each step. If you're new to wonky piecing or just feeling like you'd like a little more help, I encourage you to check them out. More details to come!

In the video tutorials, I'll be making a second version of this quilt using Amanda Murphy's Cotton Shot prints from Benartex. I decided to use darker colors for my background and I love how different this version looks!

Introducing Wonk Around the Block!

I'm soooo excited to share this quilt today!

Meet "Wonk Around the Block"

54" x 65"

This quilt includes both traditional and wonky piecing for a fun modern result.
The pattern will be available as a Block of the Month, running for 6 months. 

I'll also be offering video tutorials as an add-on, where I'll walk you through the steps each month--especially helpful if you're new to wonky piecing and maybe feeling a bit intimidated. (It's easy! I promise!)

Of course there's a backstory behind this quilt!
My guild, the Great Lakes Modern Quilt Guild, had approached me about creating a modern BOM for members to participate in, tentatively scheduled for 2021. Then Coronavirus happened, and I thought that 2020 might be better--a nice distraction as many of us are spending more time at home and not having in-person guild meetings. I played around with a design, shared it with the guild, and started sewing. One month later, here we are!

I'll be posting details about how to purchase the pattern and the video tutorials as soon as everything is finalized. I hope you'll consider joining me!
